As I sit here, at my computer, writing this article my antivirus program is chugging away in the background. Its task is to scan for any virus that might have slipped in while I was looking for some information on the internet. My computer has a firewall, but occasionally some new virus will slip through.

I also have an antivirus program for my heart. When Jesus came into my life He inoculated my soul from sin. 1 John 1:7, 9 “but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin … 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

That inoculation from sin does not make me perfect. It makes my spirit have the ability to fight off and resist the temptation that leads to sin. Just as with my computer there are new viruses being developed by bad people, so there are new temptations, or new ways for the temptations to present themselves.

As a result I need booster shots to keep my anti-sin program up to date. I get those booster shots as I fellowship with other believers in Bible study, worship and prayer. Hebrews 10:23-25 “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more, as you see the day drawing near.”

There also needs to be a firewall which constantly scans incoming information, preventing prying eyes from stealing my personal information and even from damaging the very heart of my computer. Our firewall for the soul is the whole armor of God. Ephesians 6:10-18 “Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one. 17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.”

Is your anti-sin package up to date?
